Free rate increase letter template for freelancers. Fill in a few details and copy a kind, firm note that raises your rate and keeps the client.

A kind, firm note that raises your rate and keeps the client. Fill in a few details, copy it, and send it with plenty of notice.

## How to use it

1. Add your client’s first name, your new rate and the date it starts.
2. Name a project you made together, or leave it blank and the letter skips that line.
3. Copy the letter and send it at least 30 days before the new rate begins.

## Rate increase letter FAQ

**How much notice should I give?**
At least 30 days, and 60 for retainers or long projects. It gives your client time to plan, and you time to answer questions.

**How much should I raise my rate?**
Many freelancers review once a year. Use the [freelance rate calculator](https://www.meadowdesk.com/tools/freelance-rate-calculator) to see where your rate should be, then move towards it in steps.

**Do I need to explain why?**
A sentence is enough. You don’t owe anyone a breakdown of your costs.

**What if the client says no?**
Thank them, then decide whether to keep them at the old rate for a set time, or part ways kindly.

**Should I raise rates for every client at once?**
You can, but many freelancers start with new clients and move existing ones over at a natural break: a new year, a new project or a contract renewal. Long-standing clients often get a little extra notice.
